Sinead O'Connor's music hit a vein in the heart and minds of so many GenXers - and particularly for women. Her ferocity was combined with an angelic fragility wrapped in a punk sensibility. "Nothing Compares to You" is one of the finest videos of all time in its simplicity and the power of her delivery. It's exquisite.

We feel very sad that she's passed, but glad that she's at peace alongside her beloved son.

And although she caused quite a hullabaloo on SNL back in the day, when we witnessed this, we knew EXACTLY what she was protesting when she sang of child abuse and ripped the picture. Many of us did - it just took a long time for men in power in the Catholic church to own up to the widespread abuse. Sinead wasn't ahead of her time in her act of protest - she was right on time. It was just the male Church authorities who tried to delay justice to those many thousands abused by them..
