For those of you needing a shot in the arm (or a kick in the bum) to get your motivation kickstarted, I recommend Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable by Tim Grover, physical trainer (and semi-psychologist) to athletes like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dwyane Wade. Even wonder how elite athletes get - and stay - that way? It's not just about staying in shape, that's for sure. I've been a lawyer for 30 + years and I think about what mental blocks lawyers sometimes have to optimize their business development and marketing muscles. I've been studying the mindset of elite athletes to find some clues how to have us all break through to - though it sometimes sounds cheesy - next level results.
In this book, Grover lays out 13 "essential traits" that his clients have. One thing I love is that he doesn't put them in numerical order - they are all number one, because he doesn't want you honing in on the top one and ignoring or scaling the rest. He talks about being "Coolers," "Closers," and "Cleaners." You'll find out where you fall on that list and decide whether - and how - you might shift where you currently are to where you want to be.
While you're reading "Relentless," consider watching "The Last Dance" on Netflix, which is about Michael Jordan and the 1997-1998 Bulls season, the last with the iconic lineup and heading towards its sixth championship. Grover makes an appearance in episode four. It makes the lessons from "Relentless" even more impactful as you can see how Jordan expands his skills and leadership over the years. It's an addictive watch (though my daughter would disagree and complains every time I say: "check out this dunk!").
